Marriage Intensives · Westlake Austin

Your marriage didn't break overnight. A weekly session won't fix it.

You're not here because things are a little off.

You're here because your marriage is in trouble and you know it. Maybe you've tried weekly therapy and it felt too slow. Maybe one of you has already mentioned divorce. Maybe you're both high-functioning on the outside and falling apart behind closed doors.

Whatever brought you here — an affair, years of built-up resentment, a conversation that finally crossed the line — you need more than a 50-minute hour once a week.

You need concentrated, sustained therapeutic work that matches the seriousness of what you're facing.

You've stopped talking about anything real — and you both know it
The same fight keeps happening, with the same outcome, on repeat
There's been a betrayal — and trust feels impossible to rebuild
One of you is already thinking about leaving
Weekly therapy feels like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic
You're both successful people — and you can't understand why you can't fix this

Why a marriage intensive works when weekly therapy hasn't

The therapeutic research is clear: sustained, concentrated intervention creates neurological and relational shifts that fragmented weekly sessions can't match.

01

No More Resetting

In weekly therapy, you spend the first 15 minutes catching up and the last 10 winding down. That leaves 25 minutes of actual work — and seven days for old patterns to solidify. An intensive eliminates the reset entirely.

02

Breakthrough Depth

Real breakthroughs require sustained emotional engagement. Hour three of an intensive reaches depths that hour one of a weekly session never will. You get past the surface, past the defenses, into the material that actually changes things.

03

Momentum, Not Maintenance

Weekly therapy often becomes maintenance — managing symptoms without transforming the underlying dynamic. An intensive creates escape velocity. You fundamentally restructure how you relate to each other.

Weekly Therapy vs. Marriage Intensive

Both have value. But for couples in crisis, the math is different.

Weekly Sessions

Traditional format. Effective for lower-acuity issues over time.

50 minutes of session time per week
15+ minutes lost to warm-up and wind-down
7 days between sessions for patterns to re-entrench
6–12 months for meaningful progress

Marriage Intensive

Concentrated intervention for couples who can't wait months.

4–12+ hours of sustained therapeutic work
Full engagement from the first moment
Continuous momentum builds breakthroughs in real time
Achieve in one day what takes 3–6 months weekly
Private, one-on-one — no group retreat, no strangers

What a day with me looks like

Every intensive is custom-built around your specific crisis. But here's the structure that guides the day.

1

Pre-Intensive Individual Sessions

Before your intensive

I meet with each partner individually before the intensive. This gives me a clear picture of where each of you stands — your concerns, your blind spots, your goals — so we walk into the intensive with no cold open and no wasted time.

2

Mapping the Core Dynamic

Morning session

We identify the negative cycle that's running your marriage — the pattern underneath every fight, every shutdown, every wall. This isn't surface-level. We go to the root.

3

Structured Intervention

Core therapeutic work

Using evidence-based interventions tailored to your specific crisis, we restructure communication, process unresolved injuries, and rebuild the emotional connection that's been eroded.

4

Skill Building & Integration

Afternoon

Breakthroughs mean nothing without infrastructure. We build practical tools and frameworks you'll use immediately — specific to your patterns, not generic worksheets.

5

Your Roadmap Forward

Closing & follow-up plan

You leave with a clear, concrete plan — what to do this week, what to watch for, and when we check in next. The intensive isn't the end. It's the turning point.

Working with Mike

"We'd been in therapy for two years with minimal progress. Mike cut through everything in a way our previous therapist never did. He's direct, he doesn't let you hide, and that's exactly what we needed."

"I was skeptical. My wife dragged me in. Within the first hour I understood why she insisted. Mike sees the dynamic between you with scary clarity and names what nobody else has been willing to name."

"We almost didn't come. We were days away from calling a lawyer. The session gave us a way to talk to each other again for the first time in months. That was enough to turn things around."

"Both of us are executives. We don't do well with soft approaches. Mike is the first therapist who matched our energy and held us accountable instead of just validating. Exactly what high-performers need."

About Mike

Crisis Couples Specialist

Licensed Clinical Social Worker

West Lake Hills, Austin TX

I'm Mike McCabe. I work with marriages in crisis.

I see individuals and couples across the board, but crisis couples work is where I specialize. When a marriage is on the edge, you need someone who's done this before and isn't afraid to be direct about what's happening.

Most therapists are trained to be neutral facilitators. I'm not neutral. I'm on the side of the marriage. That means I'll name the patterns you're both running, challenge the stories you tell yourselves, and push you past the comfortable scripts that keep you stuck.

"I don't do gentle. I do honest. And honest is what gets marriages unstuck."

My practice is in West Lake Hills, Austin. I work with high-performing couples in the Westlake and West Austin area who need concentrated, no-nonsense therapeutic work — not six months of small talk leading to modest insight.

Before you decide

This is common. The reluctant partner often becomes the most engaged once they're in the room. Start with the consultation call — I can help you think through how to present this to your partner. Many of my most successful outcomes started with one skeptical spouse.

No. Retreats are group experiences with shared activities. This is private, clinical therapeutic work — just the two of you and me in my office. No strangers, no group sharing, no trust falls. Real therapy, compressed.

No. My practice is entirely private-pay. This allows me to dedicate the time and focus your situation requires without insurance-driven session limits. I can provide a superbill for potential out-of-network reimbursement.

Absolutely. An intensive can complement your existing therapy by accelerating through specific stuck points. Many couples use an intensive to break through a plateau, then return to their regular therapist with new momentum.

That's exactly who this is for. I specialize in couples at the precipice. An intensive isn't a magic wand, but it gives you the best possible chance to find out if your marriage has a path forward — before you spend $30K on attorneys finding out the hard way.

My intensives draw primarily from Terry Real's Relational Life Therapy (RLT), combined with Gottman research. RLT is direct — it names the patterns, holds both partners accountable, and focuses on changing behavior, not just gaining insight.

The conversation that changes everything starts here.
